Musings

Recently, I’ve been thinking about my past work in creating lessons and curriculum. As I’ve grown both professionally and personally in this field, I’ve learned a lot and started to see where I made some mistakes as an instructional designer. One important lesson I’ve learned is that I used to design curriculum with the teacher’s needs in mind rather than focusing on the learners themselves.

While it’s natural to think about the teacher’s role, this approach can overlook the unique needs and learning styles of the students. Good curriculum design should be centered around the learners, considering not just the content being taught but also how students interact with it, how they understand it, and how they can use it in real life. Shifting the focus from what’s easiest for the teacher to what works best for the learners helps create more engaging and effective learning experiences. This change in perspective has been a key part of my development as an instructional designer, and it has led me to create better learning experiences that truly support students.
